MA LONG, WORLD NUMBER
ONE, NOW CHAMPION
OF THE WORLD

Article From :  ping magazine.com
Three times the bronze medallist; in a final full of breath-taking
scintillating rallies, Ma Long, the top seed, won the Men’s Singles
title at the QOROS 2015 World Championships on the evening of
Sunday 3rd May.
In a contest that kept the capacity crowd in the Suzhou International Expo Center spellbound,
Ma Long beat Fang Bo, the no.13 seed, in an all-Chinese final.
A man with a mission to prove he is currently the best player in the world, Ma Long emerged
successful in six games (11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-13, 11-4).

POINT TO PROVE
Against Fan Zhendong at the semi-final
stage, Ma Long had been on fire earlier in
the day. In the final, it was the very same
attitude that was displayed, positive, adrenalin
gushing through the body.
Ma Long had a point to prove; listed at no.1
on the Men’s World Ranking list on no less
than 32 of the monthly publications but
never the World champion; the player who
reaches the pinnacle of the rankings is respected,
the player who is the champion is
immortalised.

SIMILAR STYLE
In Suzhou, Ma Long faced an opponent
who was playing at a new level, playing the
best table tennis of his life in a style not
The first two games were shared as the two
traded blow for blow in a heavyweight forehand
top spin contest; the third game went
to Ma Long in what had become an athletic
duel that captivated the crowd
SIMILAR STYLE
No quarter was asked, no quarter given;
accepted that both players were from the
same national association but that fact
paled into insignifi cance as two superb athletes
plied their skills. They showed table
tennis to be a sport that demands high
levels of fi tness, balance, anticipation and
mental strength.

TIME OUT LESSON
In the fourth game, there was little choose
between the two gladiators with Ma Long
having a slight advantage at 6-5; Fang Bo,
perhaps surprisingly, called “Time Out”.
The break worked but it worked in favour
of Ma Long, he won the next three points.
Fang Bo won the next two points, Ma Long
called “Time Out”.
Notably, neither had left the decision to
a game which could have concluded the
match. Perhaps for coaches and players
worldwide, there is a lesson to be learned.
Again the break worked in favour of Ma
Long, he went ahead 10-8, two game
points, a rally, Fang Bo in control but a return
from Ma Long clipped the top of the
net, Fang Bo failed to return.

FIFTH GAME
Was that the type of luck you need to win
the big fi nal?
Luck or not, the two games cushion had
given Ma Long the distinct advantage. Belief
was growing in his mind; every success
was greeted with a guttural roar.
He led 6-2, then 8-5, closer and closer but
Fang Bo to his great credit maintained a
positive approach. He reduced the arrears
to one point at 8-7; then the point of the match, fearsome top spin exchanges. The
point went to Ma Long, the next three to
Fang Bo; he led 10-9. Ma Long saved the
game point and then at 11-10 held Championship
point.
Now Fang Bo saved and then with rallies of
the highest possible calibre, powerful top
spin play, secured the next three points, the
margin was down to one game in favour of
Ma Long.

FOUR YEAR REIGN
OVER, FAN BO BEATS
ZHANG JIKE TO BOOK
FINAL PLACE
AT FIRST ATTEMPT

Attempting to match the record
of his compatriot Zhuang Zedong
who secured the crown
on three consecutive occasions
starting in 1961; Zhang Jike,
the no.3 seed, was beaten at the
semi-final stage of the Men’s
Singles event at the QOROS
2015 World Championships in
Suzhou by Chinese National
Team compatriot, Fang Bo, the
no.13 seed.
Against all expectations and predictions,
Fang Bo playing in the Men’s Singles event
at a World Championships for the very first Fang Bo as matters commenced; moving
freely, usually the first to attack, he dominated
the opening game.
The errors were minimal and it was very
much the same at the start of the second
game; in the counter top spin department,
he was the equal of Zhang Jike. The first
game secured, the second followed not in
such a commanding fashion but with a degree
of comfort.
Zhang Jike was making more errors than
expected when trying to control the fluent
top spin play of his adversary; equally in the
rallies the vote went with Fang Bo.
time, secured a five games win (11-5, 11-
7, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10),

Paving Table Tennis Supremacy;
Tarlac’s Gossima
Table Tennis Center

By: Ruth Hazel A. Galang
In the melting pot of Central Luzon, a table tennis center and club is starting to make a sound. Striking in green, let’s hail the
Gossima Table Tennis Center.
How it started :
Before a table tennis center was built in Tarlac City, table tennis players would only play to an indoor badminton court with a single table set upped on the side. In order to have an improved and exclusive experience of playing table tennis, coaches Gregorio Guash, Ryan Samia and James Cruz, a father of a Don Bosco player then, decided to open a table tennis center.
The project was simply experimental and was designed for table tennis enthusiasts mostly from the province. Preparations were short and everything was done quickly. For a span of a week, they have found a space in F.Tanedo Street and arranged any necessities. Until on May 3, 2013, Gossima Table Tennis Center was officially founded.

Root of the word :
Deriving from the surname of inventor of the game, Gossima was the earlier name of table tennis. Mrs. Cruz researched and suggested the word. Sooner it became the table tennis center’s title.

Gossima’s mission:
Unlike other sports, table tennis was not popular in the province of Tarlac. Gossima Table Tennis Center’s main purpose is to promote the sport and make the sport be of interest to everyone. Also, it also aims to train and develop players who could represent the province in different competitions and tournaments.
Honing the ‘star’:
Gossima always seeks to produce elite players from the province. One of the Gossima’s pride is Jansen Cruz, a current member of the University of Sto. Thomas’ (UST) table tennis team. He is now a second year BS Computer Science student of the said university and enjoying a full scholarship.

Ups and downs:
Throughout the Gossima’s existence, there were always struggles. There were times where no players are coming. Being a non-government organization, it had survived solely from the players, coaches and parents’ contributions.

Mr. James Cruz and other trainers and coaches in the group thought of ways of how the club could carry on and how they could encourage more players. Different strategies were used. The table tennis center was being advertised, training sessions were initiated, and tournaments were launched.

Today, the Gossima table tennis center is on the rise. Players from different schools, institutions, and even individuals who makes playing table tennis leisure comes and enjoys the experience. Gossima already had its third tournament which was being participated by different players and clubs from various parts of the region and even in the metro. It had also made connections with other table tennis clubs and organizations in the country.

With its pillars, James Cruz, Gregorio Guasch, Ryan Samia and Marco Unite, the Gossima Table Tennis Center is getting stronger and bigger as they gradually reach their objectives.                 From its humble beginning, Gossima Table Tennis Center is now more committed to uphold their purpose: to unite people through the art of table tennis.

SAN GABRIEL TABLE TENNIS CLUB

By: Zurc Dranreb
The SAN GABRIEL TABLE TENNIS CLUB (SGTTC) of San Gabriel, La Union was formed on April 13, 2013 by the initiative of Mr. Bernard Rian Sylvester Cruz, its founder and coach, who only believes that this sport can actually provide an environment that promotes and supports an active lifelong participation at all levels. Thus it is the mission of the club to have a working partnership with everyone in creating opportunities for all to enjoy the sport, to actually stay in the sport and eventually achieve their full potential in table tennis.   The inspiration came from the table tennis club in Pasig city namely Santolan Table Tennis Club (STTC) and Kapasigan Table tennis Club (KTTC) who strongly support children in learning how to play Pingpong from beginner to advanced level.
In its early beginnings, it started out as a form of hobby and recreation to stretch muscles. Mr. Cruz bought a second hand standard pingpong table from Raon in Manila.  There were only adult players, mostly his friends at that time and noticed some children just watched them play.  Since its summer time, he decided to ask the children around if they are interested in playing table tennis. There were only 3 kids agreed to train with him at first namely, Kim, John Paul and Hannah. News spread immediately to their playmates and invited them in for regular practice. It grew to a larger number of kids coming into their house to have training. From physical exercises, on and off table drills to multi balls training, they have become table tennis enthusiasts. They are now representing their respective schools in tournaments alike and some brought trophies and medals while others became a varsity player.
While Mr. Cruz left for work overseas, 2 older players, Christian and Rodney took over and watched out for the club and their trainees and constantly practice whenever they have time. It’s a volunteer work and continues to be better by visiting other club, the San Fernando City Table Tennis Association (SFCTTA) headed by Coach Aries Galvez are partners in tune up games for the SGTTC  kids.   Mr. Cruz hopes for the club to be recognized in the table tennis community around the country and will continue to teach kids who wants to play table tennis for free.

SEA Games: Up close with table tennis player
Richard Gonzales

At age 44, Richard Gonzales may be the oldest table tennis player in this 28th SEA Games competition. Despite his age, he is quick on his feet and has the strong mental prowess which allows him to outwit other paddlers who are merely half his age. We witnessed this when he put up a strong fight in the Men's Singles event, which saw his first silver medal since the 2005 SEA Games in Manila, conceding defeat only to Singapore's Gao Ning.Sharing with the media on his experience at the 28th SEA games, Gonzales said that he was very happy and found it a challenge to be able to play against top ranked international players who were much younger than him.

This is partly due to him lacking much international experience as he trains mainly within Manila with only 1-2 international games annually, hence this SEA Games is a very good experience for him. Known as the "comeback kid" for his dark horse comebacks in the games, he described his playing style as 'staying cool under pressure'. He is also extremely proud to be representing his nation, as he is serving as an Army reserve under the Philippines Sports Commission, hence, to him, playing in international competitions is like fighting a "war" for his nation.Gonzales started off playing table tennis in the streets with a hard bat, under the encouragement of his father. When he first started at age 13, money was his motivation. However, he soon grew to love the game and wanted to represent his country in this sport. At age 29, he won the try-outs for the national team - and it is only then when he switched over to a regular International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) approved bat. And that was when his life started revolving around table tennis. He trains from Monday to Friday, 3 hours each in the morning and afternoon, and has been in the national team for over 20 years. When asked on his future plans, Gonzales hopes to continue playing for his national team for as long as he can, though he hopes to expand his current private coaching work with children so he would be able to coach the national team when he retires. Despite the fielding of other veteran players such as Rodel Valle, his team manager shared that the Philippines is still serious in developing its young talents with the fielding of younger players such as Rodney Jacolo for the SEA Games, and also the creation of grassroots platforms such as Batang Pinoy which grooms budding athletes for the YOG and beyond.Gonzales continues in the table tennis competition in the Men's team event, and we wish him all the best in his events
